Student Activities Committee
This season, 2020-2021, I will be handling student activities. ASHRAE, intents to reach students as early as possible to be able to encourage the study and engineering education at universities, and promote HVAC&R industry. To be able to promote careers in the HVAC&R industry, we will try to introduce ASHRAE student membership on Long Island, support existing ASHRAE student branches and encourage the development of new ASHRAE student branches. We will promote grant and design competition programs, math and science to K- 12 students, and describe how the study of math & science can lead an exciting career in engineering.
The Long Island Chapter may have some advantages yet to be implemented in student activities. First of all, the HVAC&R design firms and contractors are feeding the world’s one of the largest city, NYC. Architects are trying to design the best looking, the most convenient, the highest quality buildings with the best IAQ, IEQ tower. Or, residential buildings, or town houses can’t be ordinary. Frankly, HVAC&R industry may not be the most exciting career choice for students, due to its relation to heavy math works. Touching to the students at early phase may change this perception. ASHRAE is bringing together many factions of research, design, construction, energy, sustainability, and the environment, it’s not just an HVAC engineering society.
This year, we will try to get new members, renew student membership and branches. We will post awards, scholarships, design competition, grants. Steamboat competition may attract a vast amount of high school students on Long Island. Central New York chapter in Syracuse organized very successful steamboat competitions for the last years. We will pursue the opportunity of implementing the STEAM BOAT competition on Long Island. Obviously, we will need the help of other committees and volunteers in chapter. Obviously, I will try to reach out our members and seek help for student activities committee. I’d like to give a heads up. Students are important for ASHRAE society.
